ecotones:

Areas of transition, where natural systems overlap and can form something entirely new.

why ecotones?

Ecotones hold significant biological, cultural, and design value. In nature, they can support greater species diversity, making them more resilient. They are adaptive transitional zones that connect two contrasting systems, often blurring or softening edges.
I’m drawn to ecotones not only for their ecological richness but also as a metaphor for the transitional spaces I often navigate in my work — between disciplines, systems, and scales. They demonstrate how bridging isolated categories can lead to greater depth and richness.

As a landscape architect, my work has always been shaped by a deep interest in both science and art. I'm driven by the connection between people and the natural world, and how we relate to the places we inhabit. With a background in fine arts and graphic design, I was originally drawn to landscape architecture through a love of nature and a growing curiosity about ecological systems — a discipline where creative expression and environmental understanding come together. As a mom and educator, I’m guided by the belief that time in nature supports our well-being and deepens our understanding of the environment. Designers have a unique role — and responsibility — to help restore those connections, not just for people, but for the biodiversity we depend on. After 15 years in design practice, I became full-time faculty in an allied discipline. This crossover allows me to introduce ecological thinking to students who can apply it in fresh and unexpected ways. While many of them feel a strong connection to the natural world, they don’t always recognize how their creative practices impact it — or how they might engage with it more intentionally.
